Biography
Dr. Ryan Hoult is a Senior Lecturer in Structural and Earthquake Engineering at the University of Newcastle, where his research is driven by a single overarching goal: making concrete structures safer when the ground shakes. His work spans experimental testing, advanced modelling, and design innovation, with a particular focus on reinforced concrete (RC) walls under in-plane and out-of-plane seismic demands, low-damage structural systems, and the torsion and warping behaviour of asymmetrical, non-planar cross-sections.
A recurring theme across his research is resilience — both structural and material. Dr. Hoult has made significant contributions to understanding the vulnerabilities of non-ductile concrete buildings, particularly in the Australian context where seismic risk is frequently underestimated. His current work pushes this further, investigating how emerging reinforcement materials such as Shape Memory Alloys (SMAs) and Glass Fibre Reinforced Polymer (GFRP) bars can improve resistance to both corrosion and earthquake actions, while also exploring sustainable concrete mixes compatible with GFRP reinforcement.
Beyond the lab, Dr. Hoult is a committed mentor and supervisor who takes seriously the responsibility of developing the next generation of structural engineers. He has played an active role in organising national and international conferences and works to ensure his research translates into real-world engineering practice — not just academic output.
